Title: "A Love Letter To FreeBASIC" Competition (Oct 2018 – Feb 2019), 1000 $ 1st prize
Post by: Lachie Dazdarian on October 08, 2018, 12:16:34 PM
Dear FreeBASIC friends and fellow travellers.

After a 4 years long delay I’m sponsoring a new FreeBASIC Games Directory Game Dev Competition, and the last one I will ever sponsor.

Since this is a conscious decision to make it my LAST, it is my wish to make the theme of this competition FREEBASIC itself and its community, and the impact it had on each of us individually.

The entries should be developed as a homage, a love letter to the very compiler/community, or as a final farewell, depending on the sentiments of the entrant, both hopefully being accepted as legit, by all participants and followers of the competition.

A LOVE LETTER (https://i.imgur.com/7uhpuCc.png)TO FREEBASIC

Summary:
The objective in this competition is to create a game that is your expression of love and appreciation toward FreeBASIC and the FreeBASIC community, as appreciation for the positive impact it had on you as a person.

Competition rules:
* the entry must reference FreeBASIC in some way, the FreeBASIC community, or its members (it can be more or less related to gameplay, a backdrop, a vague theme, you can toy with the horse mascot for example, make a cyberpunk RPG where you hack using FB, you name it, …)
* the entry must be compiled in FreeBASIC
* source code must be provided with the entry
* all libraries wrapped for FreeBASIC are allowed (FBgfx, GL2D, OpenGL, SDL, ...)
* the competition entries must be submitted via email or in this thread before the 11th of February 2019, 18:00 GMT
* the winner will receive 1000 $ cash prize paid via PayPal or Bitcoin or Etherium; the 2nd place holder will receive a 700 $ cash prize, 3rd 400 $, 4th 200 $ and 5th 100 $
* in case of donations during the course of the competition, prizes will be increased
* all entries will be evaluated by competition sponsors (those who forked their own cash), while one category will be based on community votes
* teams are allowed
* non-original work MUST be credited (music, graphics, story, ...)

Scoring details (as with the last competition):
Game design (35 points max): The emphasis in this category will be on how much the theme is expressed in the game overall.
Gameplay (15 points max): In this category I will evaluate how much the game is fun and challenging to play.
Progression (6 Points max): In this category I will evaluate the progression in the game (is it present and how much it enhances the play experience). This will be used to award the entries that feature more depth in comparison to those that don't feature it.
Replay Value (6 Points max)
Graphics (7 points max)
Sound/music (7 points max)
Personal likeness (from 4 to 6 points max)
Community vote (up to 10 points): Depends on the number of entries. I'll try to separate the entries with at least 2 points, depending on their final placement in community vote.

I encourage everyone to share their WIP, but if worried about sharing concepts/ideas before the deadline, I think all would appreciate at least some vague info on what you are working on and the progress.

We will also organize a second round for those who will not manage to complete their entries for round one. Round two will last until 18th of March, and the only condition is that you don't submit anything for round one. Round two first prize is 300 USD, second prize is 100 USD.

Why this competition?

After such a long absence from the community, interrupted with an occasional yearly glance, I realized recently that I will never, or at least not in the foreseeable future, return actively to FreeBASIC.

And I believe many people who were once important members of the community and very active in the past, feel similarly. And them, equally as I, most likely feel they’ve left too abruptly, without that being a result of some conscious decision. This is a chance for them to give one final farewell to FreeBASIC.

The other group are those who still plan to continue to use FreeBASIC, and this is their opportunity to develop a game expressing their love and appreciation for the compiler. And also a chance to win 1000 $.

I would not like to see feelings of resentment toward people who want to make a conscious decision to develop their final FreeBASIC work via this competition, from those who want to continue using FreeBASIC, and vice versa. Allow those who want to say goodbye to say their goodbye, and those who still see future in FreeBASIC, to demonstrate their dedication. Let’s part as friends and commemorate the days we spend together as something valuable.

Hi,
Here is a link to a work in progress demo of my entry:

http://ssjx.co.uk/windows/fbgd.php

The idea is that you will go inside various smart devices and use FreeBasic to clean/cure the evil programs inside them. Or something along those lines...

The home screen is a little dull at the moment so I am thinking of adding some cyber ghosts which will you stun to allow you to access the device they are linked to.

This very early demo with lots that still needs doing but just wanted to show what I am working on.

I think this game will fall under 'vague theme' category! :)

Thanks for looking!

This is great.

Thanks for sharing.

The space shooter is already fun.

Looking forward where this will go further.

Have not made any progress since my last update. I am focused on work and will not have any spare time until the holidays, when I have several weeks off altogether. I want each feature of my game to be something I can make in just a couple hours. I spent too long on the first feature and it's making me nervous to pick up the code again because I don't have enough time to spend 4 - 6 hours on each component, when I want 2 - 3 dozen features in my game altogether.

Like I said in my progress thread, the idea is that each feature can be completed and left as-is, so the game will always be ready for release. I've been spending a lot of time in the back of my head thinking about how I can code features quickly and also always have the game releasable in case I run out of dev hours.

I've made a lot of progress in the last few days.
I have a title screen already.
Game is almost playable.

I've made some progress on my entry, but most of my time for dev is being taken up by Yuki PC right now. Once that's out of the way, I can focus more time on this.

My entry I am calling 'Programs of Legend', is a programming game where players will explore a procedurally generated world using bots that they program using a GUI that exposes a small subset of FB.  I have managed to set up the underlying libraries and graphics code to compile in 32 bit windows, 64 bit windows, and 64 bit linux, but I have a long way to go before it is playable.  Once I have it working well enough, I'm hoping I can crowd source the community for code that can be used by opponent bots.. :-)

Attached is a portion of a screenshot showing a rendering of a large number of high resolution orthographic voxel tiles.  These tiles are drawn by first rendering them to a texture and then from the texture to the game map display.  The tiles shown are simple demo tiles, as I still need to make tiles and sprites for this.

Adjusted the prizes incorporating the latest donation. The current prize pool so far is 650 USD and will be distributed as folows:

1st place - 350 USD
2nd place - 200 USD
3rd place - 50 USD
4th place - 25 USD
5th place - 25 USD

The current sponsors:
Pritchard - 200 USD
Leopardpm - 100 USD
Pete Berg - 100 USD
Lachie Dazdarian - 250 USD

All sponsors will be contacted before evaluation process regarding scoring the entries (won't be eligible if they decide to submit an entry themselves), with their vote carrying the weight of their share in the prize pool.

Would be nice if we could find one more sponsor to beef up the 3rd and 4th place by 50 and 25 USD respectively, but as it is, this is quite a serious prize pool already.

Hi,
I've posted another demo here:

Still very much a work in progress and lots to do but it is becoming more like what I have in mind.

The python/centipede game is not really playable at the moment, you can skip it by pressing 'c' (for cheat!)

Thanks for looking!

I really like how your stuff is developing, ssjx. I quite dig how each game features a similar look, and difficulty seems to be on point. Be sure not to make the game too easy. The player needs to be penalized somehow for dieing. One of the main flaws of your previous entries. Maybe add some achievements/secrets for finishing the game without dieing or something. Also, would be nice if you could develop more the appearance in the cyber world of the thing you control, to be similar in each game. Dunno. And I'm not sure I dig the pacman ghosts you shoot at. Maybe they should be some sphere you hunt around, something more "plausable". Who are these pacman ghosts, with what and why are you shooting at them?

I would also like to see a humorous story how evil C++ programming brough down the civilization, or something crazy like that.

Well, anyway, you see your entry got me thinking in 10 directions.,

Thanks for the feedback, most of your points are on the lengthy todo list:

* The ghosts (graphics) are pretty much place holders until i draw something nicer. They are the programs having escaped from their devices, there is a good chance they will be spider like. Or at least more tied to the general look. Collision detection with the ghosts/spiders is also on the list...

* Each sub game will have varying difficulties, e.g. the first device (say tablet) will have an easy level, the next tablet would have a more difficult version and so on. Moving blocks will be added next to the maze game.

* The look of each sub game will also be improved to tie in with the device too.

* The ships graphics are place holders too. Thinking i will aim for more Tron like...

I will be making a little intro animation to explain this all! So far it is looking like 'Lightening bolt strikes router bringing all these evil programs to life and freebasic is needed to get them back into their device and cure them'.

Lots to do and I really want to include a Tempest / STUN Runner game as it seems like the perfect way to represent a network link! :)

Hi. I've talked to few people in private who still didn't start but nevertheless want to do something, and also noticed in the forums few late arrivals. And there was the late substantial prize pool increase. So I'm thinking about extending the deadline for about two weeks, but I don't want anyone who started early to feel cheated by the extension, so I'm basically looking for an unanimous acceptance of this decision.

Eager to hear your opinion.

Hi,
My entry is mostly done:

http://ssjx.co.uk/windows/ioet.shtml

Besides a bit more testing and minor tweaks, I do not expect the final entry to be much different.

A bit early given there are a few weeks to go but I did not want to leave it to the last minute!

Also, I did not plan on the intro being like a Mr Men story but it seems to work and just about explains what is going on. The first intro attempt was long and tedious...

Anyway, thanks for looking! :)

This is one of your best efforts so far, ssxj. The best gameplay-wise, IMO. Thanks for delivering this.

At the start I thought the game difficulty was a bit unfair, but after few attempts I got the jist of it, and I appreciate how constructed it is, with health being received by fininshing levels. This allows you to rack up health with easiers levels, so you have more space for error with more difficult levels. Also, levels unlocking and bonus levels are a really nice touch.

What bothers me are few things, and I think you have time to adress few of them, if you consider it worthwile.

Music. I really think you should find some free music tracks online and incorporate them in the game. The game is really asking for them. And if you implement them, please allow the user to turn up/down volume of music and sfx separately. SFX in the game is somewhat agressive. I can turn it down now manually outside the game, but if the game will feature music, I might prefer to leave the music volume up.

The appearance of the controlled object in the devices. While I know that not all graphics inside the devices are faux textual, I kinda feel the appearance of the thing you contol being made of text characters would be more effective and consistent.

I think the game should come with preset high scores, so there is some real incentive in playing the levels again by trying to beat those scores.

Finally, I really to think the professor's house and backyear is quite dull graphically. Everything looks stiff and boring. I think you managed to deliver more interesting graphics in previous entries. Not sure if something more can be done there, but maybe at least few more objects, adding some minimal animation to tiles (like blinking on devices), and maybe some animation to ghosts. It would really help the game feel more alive. His house more looks like a stage than a real house. Add some book shelves, lamps, carpets, etc., ...

Anyway, those are my two cents.

Once more, thank you for your effort. Appreciated. And I really enjoyed playing it. Will get back to it once more for scoring.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

Making the garden and house more animated and interesting is the main thing on the list, as well as improving the sound. The sound is too noisy on the levels where you have to continually shoot! Also some events could do with a fanfare or similar.

Music may be an issue as I would rather not include something created by someone else, I may take another look if there are any good simple music tools.

Initially I struggled to think of anything for this competition but it has been fun and I like what my entry turned out like. With hindsight, I would probably have made the 4 directional shooter a bigger element but that came together later and by accident (smash tv + space invaders?), hopefully people play through to get to the isometric game which is my first one of those.

Btw, the little ship has FBC on it but it is really tiny... :)

I'm really split about this competition, becuase I have like 3-4 persons I know that are working on something amazing and need more time.

We are now close to a week until the deadline.

I know I promised I won't extend it again, but the situation is quite specific, with the increased prize and several great entries on the verge of not making it. But, I wouldn't like to extend the deadline once more for no results.

So I'm polling the competition participants on several things.

Are those close to completion for the deadline or already releasing a finished entry ok with more extensions? I'm aware of ssjx, Landeel, Pitto and Boromir as those probably making it.

Those actively working on their entry who expect to fail or release something severely compromised due the deadline itself, how much of an extensions you need?

Finally, I have a compromise of an idea, but still don't prefer to have it if the current competition will end up being overall weak in number of competitive entries. I have another community member willing to offer another donation, and I'm thinking of using that donation to organize a short, about a month long, EXTRA TIME second chance type of compo specifically extending on this, where there will be only one prize (substantially smaller than current but still much more than symbolic), and where you need to waive of participating for the current deadline (you can submit, but need to officially state you don't want to run for the prizes), to prevent ppl, for example, collecting the third prize with a close to completed entry for the official deadline, and then participating again in the extension where they only polish up their game. What are everyone's thoughts on that?

My current version (v0.5b) will be the final one unless I spot any glaring bugs and would want it to enter the main competition if you did do a split.

I have no problem with an extension. I have been limited in my time to work on my entry anyway, so a few extra days wouldn't hurt. My entry has changed from what it was originally but I'm not gonna give out any details yet. :)

Ok, it's decided! It's sort of a super compromise solution. :)

Since 3 separate persons said one week will help a lot, I will extend the first round deadline for ONE MORE week, ending on 11th of February.

We will also organize a second round for all late arrivals and those who had unplanned delays. It will last from 11th of February till 18 of March (5 weeks). First prize 300 USD, second prize 100 USD. All the same theme rules apply, and only one extra condition. You can't participate in both rounds. So be sure if you want to submit OFFICIALY you entry in the first round. If not, you can still share it before, but please be explicit in waiveing your participation in round one if you don't want to compete for round one prizes and remain eligible for round two. Also, round two is not restricted to people who already started for round one, but of course, those have a head start.

For the prizes in second round, I felt they had to be low enough to sort of "penalize" those who don't manage to participate in round one, or waive their participation and opt for round two, but still substantially high not to be merely symbolic.

Hey, here's a demo of my WIP.
Some things may change in the final version, most likely level design, difficulty and some graphics.

Great work on your entry, Landeel.

Got canned in Phytonia for the second time. Getting weapons I don't want is really bogging me down. I would prefer if I had one button/slot reserved for a default weapon. Just too many weapons I feel like I should avoid, like those that freeze or grab enemies. I want them dead! :P

landeel,

I played your game and tried it with xbox controller; it worked great
But the game seemed to be running too fast for me. Is there any fps limiting done?

liked the game overall and the concept behind it! :)

ssjx,

I played your game today; Pretty good concept and wonderful execution..
Love those ascii graphics! :)

Windows Defender is telling me the precompiled binary is affected by "Trojan:Win32/Detplock" (attached image here)
So, I recompiled your program and it ran fine afterwards; Maybe your computer is infected, please check :x

Collision detection at corners in tablet levels seems to be a bit problematic (pixel perfect? xD), I keep dying to corners
where I can see that it would clear without hitting the wall but doesn't (https://imgur.com/a/hhWlwM5)

I think it's false detection. I'm running a pc with updated Windows Defender. No detection.

Yeah, I read that but that was 2 years ago.
I use Windows 10 and it is fully updated daily.
Better just check for infections just in case..

EDIT: Maybe it was a false detection, I redownloaded it and now it's not detecting anything.. hmm

The game should use VSYNC at  60Hz. So either it's not working on your system, or it's syncing to a higher frequency. Is your monitor 60 Hz?
Anyway, you can edit the .ini file, under [VIDEO] set timesync=1.
Please tell me if it works.
Glad you like it, thank you for your comments.

landeel,

Yes, So I had turned off vsync in my graphics card settings, which is why it was running too fast.
I tried the timesync=1 first, it kind of worked (as in slowed down the game) but was not smooth (movement was jerky)
So, I set vsync to application controlled in gfx card settings and then the game ran fine after that.

Played through the first level (couldn't finish it; too hard for me xD) and had fun time discovering different "punny" powers :D

Obtaining new powers can be a bit disorienting sometimes since some powers can be replaced/modified or swapped based on what command you pick up.
Maybe you can simplify choosing a palette slot for a power somehow;

Also, maybe the power sprites can be shrunk a bit? They seem a little bit big to me; I suppose they introduce difficulty but I feel they get in the way too much sometimes.
I see that you have different colours for different 'types' of powers; I'm guessing all the powers are all same sprite because it is a demo?
It would help if the sprites gave a hint as to type of power (for e.g. clear is a 'bomb', line is a 'grab', double/goto is 'shot' and so on)

Fun game overall!   :)

Hey glad you like it, and glad it works.

White is shot, yellow is shield, purple is bomb, green is misc., red is potentially dangerous.

I will call this a beta, but it's already fully playable:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Alx6zsW3vZ_4eWf53IKYBHpih1AUEuZH
 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Alx6zsW3vZ_4eWf53IKYBHpih1AUEuZH)

I have made many changes based on the feedback, mostly to the engine:
-Timesync=auto is the new default. Timesync will engage if vsync is not available;
-Added option "showfps" to display the framerate during game. It should always be 60 or close to it;
-Fullscreen=auto is the new default. In Windows with Intel graphics, the game will start windowed (resolution bug);
-Separated threaded input from multithreading. Due to instability reports, threaded input is now disabled by default;
-Can use SDL 2.0 or 1.2 for audio;
-The "select" button/key now rotates the action palette;
-Some gameplay and physics changes based on player suggestions;
-Some other stuff I can't remember;

I have followed some suggestions, and some I didn't.
I didn't want to end up with a regular shootem'up. I wanted something different, and I think I have accomplished that.
The real challenge to the game is to discover what each keyword does, and learn how to survive with them.
You will need multiple weapons, it's impossible to survive using only one kind.
It gets pretty fun and easy once you master them. Just continue playing and you will see. I promise.
It's not nearly as hard as Gradius, Zanac or the airplane stages of Cuphead.
And yeah, I have beaten it twice today.B)

Managed to beat level 1! (took 15 minutes!)   :D
Died in Pythonia by those pesky small green snakes  :P

Gamepad vibration works great! (on Windows 10 with xbox like controller)
Gamepad button bug also fixed;
Personal opinion:
1. I see that you changed amount of powers that spawned; It feels perfect now!
2. Level is/are a bit too long
3. Timesync turned on automatically for me I think; it stutters sometimes when you press buttons especially when you're moving forward or back. It gives the game a sluggish feel.

Hey, thanks for testing.
Nice to know vibration works.
I agree the levels are a bit too long, specially 3. Already talked to Lachie about this. I'll reduce them a bit before the deadline.
I don't think what you describe is timesync's fault.
Some shots will cause you to move slower while you use them, and that's intentional. You must stop shooting to move faster.
Anyway, you can disable timesync completely by setting timesync=0 in the .ini.

I don't know if I'll have time to participate, but I hate goodbyes. However, if I do, it wont be my last FB project... unless I die. I get the itch to program something in FB, every once in a while.

I've always felt a strong connection to this community, so there is something I'd like to say...

I know I haven't been the same... or just entirely gone. I'm sorry. My brother killed himself. My best friend took his own life. I haven't been the same. He was my best friend. We talked just shortly before... It's been a couple years now, so the people who don't love me say I should be better, but I'm not. I fake it, but I'm almost always sad or angry. I go hide in the bathroom at work, so I can cry. I lash out at people who have done nothing wrong... I totally ignore people... I'm sorry to bring this up in  here. We used to have like instant IRC chat and shit... Now we have fucking facebook.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm excited to see what you talented mother fuckers will create... I have too little time.

Don't kiss her(FreeBASIC) goodbye, though... Please, don't do that.

One more thing... I didn't donate anything. Good Golly, Miss Molly... HOW MUCH? WOW!!!! ;D

I'm sorry to hear all that. I wasn't aware of the extent these events troubled you. Sorry if I felt insensitive sometimes. I hope you are aware I love you. Perhaps it feels cheap, with the ocean separating us, but I consider you one of my best friends. I wish I was less useless atm, but there you go. Whenever you need me, I'll do my best to respond. For what's it's worth.

For me, making a farewell to FreeBASIC of sorts is important, because I failed to contribute in any capacity for the last 4 years, and probability that this will change is close to 0. And honesty is imporant to me. I want to be honest to myself and to the community, and from my side give a final salute. This doesn't mean I won't maintain the site or visit the forum, or answer people's emails. I just won't pretend this is an alive project anymore. It's just sad, because the stuff I did around FreeBASIC is probably the best output of any sort I ever did in my life. Still failing to translate that to other areas of life, but I need to move on. It's hard to communicate that to people who built better skills outside FreeBASIC, hobbyst and professional. Something I failed to do, and is troubling me deeply.

I don't know what's happening but I did some testing by tweaking the .ini.
I turned on showfps and tested different modes;

With only Vsync on, I was getting 60 but frequently fluctuated between 30-60
Without Vsync, I am getting like 150 in-game and it fluctuates from 80-150
With only Timesync on:  I was getting 62 but frequently fluctuated between 30-62
It seems like the FPS fluctuates a lot when I actually play the game regardless of what the fps is; and this is why I'm feeling the jerky gameplay.
It is not related to objects on screen because it happens even when only the horse is on the screen.

Then, I turned off Multithreading and then it ran smoothly at 60 fps  :)

I have a Core i3-540 3.4 Ghz (2 cores 4 threads with hyperthreading) with 4 gb ram; (running on SSD for good measure)
Game takes about 20% cpu in gameplay.

Hey, thanks for testing.
Weird, I have tried with some much slower cpus and multithreading on, and it didn't happen.
The threads don't do much, they just sort sprites by priority and handle particle movement.
The threaded input was disabled by default a few versions ago, because it was causing problems.
Something might be getting stuck.
Nice to know the workaround is already there.
I'll see what I can do to use the best possible defaults.

Here is my entry.
The Love letter to FreeBASIC (chan!)
(https://imageshack.com/a/img921/6241/u2yPUo.png)

http://www.mediafire.com/file/dm9587is2o65ho4/LoveLetter_v1.0.zip/file (http://www.mediafire.com/file/dm9587is2o65ho4/LoveLetter_v1.0.zip/file)

ChangeV wrote a love letter to FreeBASIC chan.
but there are love-crazy enemies everywhere.
They will try to approach FreeBASIC chan with various things like love letter, heart, or even the money.

beat them all and win the heart of FreeBASIC chan.
but, beware... some enemies are immune to weapons.
ChangeV needs to find a different way to beat them.
When enemies are beaten to death, they will stay on screen and confuse the player.
as more enemies pile up on screen, the battlefield will become crazy mayham.
stay sharp and good luck.

how to play:
Cursor key to move.
Z key to throw the axe.
X key to jump.

Joypad is supported but only tested with XB360-wired and PS-mini classic joypad.
default setting is for xb360 joypad.
so If you want to use joypad, be sure to go to option meanu and remap the button.

I tested game on Win10 64bit gaming PC and old winXP laptop with 700MHz cpu.(both 32 bit compile)
I couldn't use SBsound... I had no free time to test/learn it.
so I just reused old FMOD sound code and seems works ok on both win10 and xp.
