Because when it comes to small games I prefer to have control over the archive content. I want to put it where I want and keep all the files on one place. I don't need a fucking desktop icon and this game in a start up menu. I guess I consider Windows Explorer or any other file manager a mandatory application for anyone using a computer, and a person who has problems with that shouldn't be allowed to use one.

From my experience, most gamers know how to deal with zip files and prefer them. Those who don't are not gamers and are in minority of your possible audience. Over 95 % of game files I ever downloaded were zip/rar archives. Anyway, on your website you zipped your setup files too, which is something that's heavily frown upon. Zip idiots won't know how to unpack it, while those who hate setup files will hate you for having to deal both with the zip archive and the setup file.

If you really think you need setup files then provide them together with regular zip archives, as I did on FBGD with your games. Yes, I finally managed to upload the files. I don't know what's going on..

I agree.  Except for really huge games (like MMORPGs or FPSs) I prefer ZIPs.  If every game I tried from FreeBASIC used a setup program, I'd have my Start Menu and Desktop covered with stuff.  I like to try out everything, but I like to keep my desktop/start menu neat and clean.  Plus, setup is overkill for most of those small-time games anyways.  Much easier to one-click install a small game to the directory of my choice than click through a bunch of dialogs and have hundreds of little tiny games inside my Program Files directory.  Not to mention gunking up my Registry and the Control Panel Add/Remove Applications part.

On the other hand, for larger game projects I would certainly recommend providing an installer for those who haven't the faintest clue.  Since FreeBASIC is kind of an exclusive community, such people aren't likely to find out about your game unless you advertise elsewhere, but just to be on the safe side...  I think it would be wise to provide both installer and ZIP for your greater projects.  Still, try to minimize the impact of such installers.  Make them customizable, so the user can disable parts they don't want (such as desktop icons, etc.)  For lesser projects that will only ever be looked at by other programmers anyways... ZIP will probably do Wink

Another update. This seems to becoming a monthly tradition. Not my fault! More or less. Tongue

Anyway, this update feature Axiebal 7, second game on FBGD to receive 17/20. Go and check why. Sadly, Prompt Critical didn't make into this update. I blame syn9 for procrastinating on version 1.2 which supposed to be completed last night, as he told me.

Well, at least it will bright up the next update.

Cheers!

Another update with 3 entries, two new games and the full version of Galactic Empire (score increase to 15/20).

Also, I listed many games in development. A great majority of them is near completion, so I don't know what is stopping the developers. I'll never comprehend those projects that get to 90 % of completion and never get to full version.

After quite a delay, I'm updating the site with two new solid games: Shmup of Death and Escape from Lab 42.

Be sure to check the list of games in development. Many cool projects there. Maybe the future is not that grim.

After 7 months of hiatus I'm back with 6 new games on the site: Digit!, Nyx, Checkers, DarkPhear, Operation Flytrap, The Last Mission.

Visit the main site and check the new games: http://games.freebasic.net

I should apologize for disregarding this site of so long, but honestly, real life events interfered. And as usual, the activity in the community really didn't force me to hurry up with an update. Hopefully that will change in the near future.

Again, I'm using this opportunity to announce a 50 $ 1st prize FB game making competition that should start in about a week at FBGD. You will be informed.

Thank you for your support and stay tuned!

This is only a small update without new games (only two version updates), but with a nice scoop of the current game development in the community with links. Check it out.
