Nice work ssjx. I like the addition of music and the game is solidly challenging. I do think it lacks an extra (more daunting) level, and I would prefer that the outro was unlocked after all levels are completed.

I'll wait for others' final version.

EDIT:
gothon, did you hide the portal in the first level in the tree on purpose? Not sure that is a good idea. I figured it out only because I knew how a portal looks like from a previous version. I suggest you hide the portal in another level, not in the first one. Also, at one point I picked up a single yellow orb at the beginning of the game, died, and then couldn't find another one. Might be me missed it (but I doubt). Recheck your orb respawning code after player's death.

Typically i am finding minor things to fix, the piddly stuff no one else will actually notice!

I assume you will just grab the latest versions when the comp closes?

@Lachie woops, I never intended to hide the portal.  I just wanted it to be necessary to eat through the leaves to get to it.  Anyway, that is effectively fixed now.  As for orb spawning, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it atm, there are a lot of nooks and crannies on some of the levels that can hide orbs.  I recommend going around the level once again checking hard to see places.  In the future I may implement an 'orb radar' to help with that.

ColorEater3D
http://vast3d.com/ColorEater/bin/ColorEater3D-CompoEntry.zip

I now have effectively 5 levels, though the first one is too easy to count, and the last one is so hard it challenges me.  I will play through the game soon to verify that it still works.  And there is a credits screen that you can reach by beating the game, allowing you to unlock skinny mode (which is actually a bug I decided not to fix)  :-)

There is some potential to continue this game, as there are a couple colors unimplemented and the potential for levels has been hardly scratched, but I will probably not work as hard on it now that the compo is over.

Got home yesterday at 23 h so didn't have energy to close the competition.

Anyway, the official entries that got submitted are:

ssjx's Invasion of the Mononites!
Landeel's Y.A.G.A.C
FXG861's RACESII
Gothon's ColorEater3D

I'll provide download links soon.

Sadly, Lithium didn't made it and no surprise entries appeared. But thanks to all who did participate.

I do hope people will finish their entries after competition if they didn't manage to do it as they imagined for the competition.

I will set up a poll ASAP and hopefully score the entries this week.

Cheers!

Hi all!

To be honest, college beat me on this one... I basically have the black-white world completely finished, and I have a lot of code for the other two worlds as well, but before I put those all together, I wanted to port it to OpenGL. After numerous tries, even with GL2D, and dealing hours with pretty basic things that just wouldn't get working, I gave up. Anyway, I'll post a complete playable version as soon as it's done, and maybe someone will help me with the OpenGL.

As for the competition, congratulations to everyone! These entries are even better than the last competition's.

@Gothon: ColorEater3D is brilliant, great job on getting so much out of a simple snake game. It took me a few tries to get past level 3, but by the end I got through with 4 lives left. Then I got to level 4, where I didn't have time to experiment (like how to get on top of the tower in the middle), because after my first death, the game (I think) threw me in front of the yellow obstacles, so I died 3 times in a row before even pressing a key... My last life ended when I tried to climb the tower. And I didn't want to reach level 4 again all the way from the beginning so... I guess some kind of level code or save feature would be nice Smiley Other than that, I loved it. Until then, I'll just give myself a few extra lives and start from level 4 using the source code Tongue

@Landeel: I liked Y.A.G.A.C as much as I liked ColorEater3D, in fact, I'm kind of torn between them. It's just the right difficulty, the graphics are neat, and the idea is clever. I didn't really figure out exactly how to kill those robot things: do you have to jump on them in a way so that you hit them with your feet? Because sometimes I jumped on them and ended up dying... It happens mostly inside the narrow passageways, where you sort of have to "roll" to kill them. Well anyway, It was great how you really have to rely on your memory to remember where the hell you have to go next, where did the new colored blocks appear, etc... It took me about an hour to get through the first level, and I ended up being pretty dizzy by then (perhaps the side way graphics thing? or that it's fast? I have no clue).. so I didn't do the second level yet, but I'll check it out as soon as I have time.

@ssjx: My only problem was, that the game isn't so hard. Other than that, it's a great game & idea, but I think you should somehow make it more difficult. Well actually, it isn't that easy, but that's only because of the fast and sensitive controls. The only reason I lost my lives is because I'm not patient: I always ran across the large fields, and ended up suddenly hitting a crab thing. I only played through the first level, so I don't know if that changes or not.

@FXG861: I didn't really see where the game was heading towards. The screen gets colorful after about half a minute, and then another minute passes, and by then the cars are so cramped together, I always ended up crashing with one of them. And seeing as I didn't really know why I should keep on trying (as far as I know, you never win, there are always cars in front of you), what would happen if I reached something, I gave up pretty soon. Also, whenever I got a speed boost, I crashed almost immediately... So, I would say you can certainly expand on this, but in this form it isn't really complete.

So, again, congratulations to everyone, and I'm sorry Lachie that I didn't submit my entry.

My apologies for the lack of entry, I was laid off and had to move to a different province, then when I got here I had to move twice, and then started another full time job soon after. Shit happens. I actually was working on two different entries with the engine that I wrote. I'll finish them both eventually.

Good looking submissions guys, GL.

@Tusike
Thank you for your comments!
To kill the robots you have to hit them rolling or jumping, and avoid their arm.
You can either jump into their heads or back, or roll to hit them from their back.
If you are front to front in a narrow corridor, you must go back and wait until the robot turns its back to you.

Hi Everyone,

Congratulation to all competitors for your great projects.

I must admit i was very impress with the Entry of Y.A.G.A.C

But i was very surprise not to see the entry of Lithium that was so promissing.
Sorry to hear what happenned.
Good luck to you.

I was working on the project till the last possible minute but ran out of time ...

So the game is functionnal but not entirely finished.
An updated version of the game will be posted soon with the
HIGH SCORE management operationnal.

My optimal objective would be to have High Score updated via internet
so each time you play you compare your self with other player.
(But for that, i think i will need some help ...)

Tusike, thank you for your comment !!!

It made me realize that i should have add an "INFO" button on the main menu
to explain how the game proceed, what are the goal and what to expect when
getting the Bonus Icon.

Will be added in my next update as well.

So here is what you should have got inside the Info Button:

The objective of the game is to get the highest score possible, not to WIN a race.
Drive as long as you can !!!
The Best Driver = Best Score

Settings:

- There are 4 different Race Track available (1-4)

- There are 5 Level of difficulty (0-4)
  When Level is increasing:
  > Number of Opponent car increase too
  > Opponent aggressiveness increase as well

- You can define When is the Sunrise/Sunset and at what speed the time elapse dugin a day.
For each of our second time will elapsed (1/5/10/15/30) minutes in the game

- You can Select the Color of your Car and Settings for all Audio effects

- You can Define your prefered key to control the race Car

In Competition Mode:
- The Race start at Midnight, Race Track #1 at Level 0
- Time Elapse is set to 1 Sec = 5 Min
- During the Race
  > Race Track will upgrade automaticly
  > Difficulty Level will increase automaticly

In User Settings Mode:
- The Race will proceed with the predine User Settings
- There will be NO upgrade in RaceTrack or Difficulty Level

You are out of the Race if:
- You don't keep a Minimum average speed during the race
- You have no more Fuel (Harder to get as Difficulty level increase)
- You have no more LIFE

Try to collect as many Bonus Icon as you can:
- Bonus Fuel:  Fill up your tank according to your average speed
                     (More speed = More Fuel)
- Bonus Point: Give you extra Point
- Bonus Life:   Give you an Extra Life
- SpeedBoost: Give you ExtraSpeed and Invincibility in STRAIGHT LINE ONLY

At the end of the race you will receive Bonus point for:
- Number of Days that passed (Future version)
- Number of Lap made
- Number of Car that were over taken (Future Version)
- Number of Life Left

I hope theses explanations will help you enjoy the game a little bit more

@Tusike,  Thank you for playing.  I have tested the game now, and there does seem to be a glitch on level 4 where your spawn point seems to change (to a position inside one of the walls I think) if you use an arrow key to close the 'You Die' screen, if you use the 'enter' key to close the screen (as I usually do) it doesn't occur.  The spawn point of every level is supposed to be fixed, I will look into the matter now to see if I can fix this bug.
