I hired 20 capuchin monkeys and manipulated their brains with ice cream and propaganda. The result was this:

8ventures Beta 1.0

Are the 8s because it's in 8-bit color?

Well it is not "really" 8-bit color or 8-bit sound, but yes. Cool

Play a little bit, sooner or later you will meet a trader or find a dungeon entrance...
Tell me what you think about the game play.

Shit don't work.

Running Debian Wine and trying to execute your game will not work, likely because of fmod. Modifying it to remove fmod and apply all of the usual tricks (chdir exepath, etc.) would be too much trouble. Sorry, but I can't test it.

Heh, this is quite fun. Only the fact I can't save game made me stop playing it. I really like the overall graphical design, and retro sounds.

Dislikes:
I would prefer that scenes change visually somehow, because if two of the same repeat (which is often), I don't have a sense of moving. Maybe make a quick fade out/fade in or scene sliding.
Trader appearing more often and offering more varied items (it took ages of traveling for him to appear with an armor to offer).
Bread seems to be a rather scarce commodity.

I would prefer you add spells, and maybe multi-path movement, like player reaching certain junctions (I know dungeon entrances are of some sort), and then choosing where to go (to "mountain Doom!" or to "valley of D'run!" or to "swamps of Despair!"), each path having an end and a boss.

You constructed a really effective graphical style that doesn't require too much effort to expand on it, and a very potential engine for adding depth without much hassle. So I hope you will finish it, because I enjoyed the game in this unfinished form quite a bit.

BTW, what's the purpose of the beggar? I wish I could put him out of his misery. I know, I'm a wonderful human being. A humanitarian!

Keep up the great work!

And don't forget to make sure it works on Wine. Grin

Maybe you should get Windows and dual boot your PC, instead of annoying people with these sort of requests. Making their game work on a Windows emulator for Linux should be last on their list.

A Windows emulator for Linux. It's a different story.

I would explain to you why I'm live booting, but you're not worth my time.

Jea I had these things in mind too.
More animations follow, includes moving.
Events like traders and bread aren't really tested jet. There will be changes.
Some spells and more "tools" will follow, that is why your item bar is still so empty right now.
"multi-path"... something like that, will be.
The beggar, the poor fella, I thought something like you can give him money and get an item or something like that. Part of the storyline.

I can't say when it will be "done". Can be in a month, can be in a year Wink whatever feels good for me.
