X11? As in DirectX 11? While microsuck is rushing out version after version of DyslexicX, OpenGL has just gotten to version 3. I'm glad for them. Also, you only need one file- just one! On windows it's opengl32.dll and I don't know what it is on linux, but DisectX uses like twenty different files! It just sucks!

I do like 3d stuff and everything 3d still impresses me, the main thing i find is that creating models can be very time consuming and i have still to get 3d collision working well (though i have not really looked into it that much). Here is some of my FB 3D progs:

http://ssjx.co.uk/windows/test.php

Btw, i assume x11 as in the linux windowing system.

No way, you're the one who made that famous obj loader? It should be included with FBC it's so good! That's awesome! I've never really done anything in OpenGL myself besides work on a GL wrapper for autohotkey and load in a few example programs. From what I understand, OpenGL code is kind of like:

#include "GL\gl.bi"

screenres 640,480,32,,0 or 2

do
   glBegin(GL_POLYGONS)
      `I don't know any gl drawing commands :P
   glEnd()
   flip
loop

end

Lachie, I hope you don't take off too many points for graphics, because it looks like FBC-Linux has some serious issues in that regard. This probably means I won't be doing real time rendering, but I've some idea to get around that. Hey, maybe I'll go with a 3d text adventure game. Tongue

(I'm serious about that, but it's still funny)

Well, the graphics will never be the main factor in my competitions...I'll try to think of something interesting and flexible in this department. Probably starting the weekend after this one. This weekend I hope to compile an update with 3-4 games. Smiley

And I think that will increase once I come up with the rules...your support is appreciated.

The rules should be decided based on votes. I personally think that official libraries should be limited to only gl.bi. No system-specific libraries should be allowed except OpenGL. Any other libraries should be included with the game. I hate it when people use GLUT or DefectX or some random thing that only works with Windows.

The rules should be determined by the competition organizer(s). Where did you hear of a compo where the competitors decide (democratically or not, it's irrelevant) about the rules? It doesn't work like that. I'm sorry if my profile of competitions doesn't suit your individual preferences, but it's up to you if you will participate or not. From my experience, retro, medium sized and simple competitions always have the best results in our community.

I think a competition that would require each contestant to make the same kind of game would also be fun. For example, each contestant writes an amoeba program, that can play against a human or another engine, and then we decide the winner by having the engines play against each other. Or everyone makes a snake game and the most fun wins.
I mean to say that somehow the fun factor of the games should be balanced. For example, if someone decides to make a snake game, that would be much more easier to make into a fun, graphically good game than if someone decided to try a breakout game, so even though the latter one may have put more effort into it, the snake game would get a higher score. The problem with this idea is that then we'd be stuck with a bunch of games that you play in the same way. Or if we had more competitors then at least we could have categories - the best snake game, platform game, arkanoid game, etc...

And yes, I agree that we shouldn't vote the rules. I'm just giving suggestions about the theme.

I already have my idea of a game. Don't make me change it. Tongue

I just want it to hurry up and start. Grin

After I update my OS. It seems I have fallen prey to the broken assembler issue, and I have to wait till I get back to fix it. Maybe that's why I haven't been able to work with OpenGL.

I got unexpectedly side-tracked this weekend, so a site update will be delayed for few days. Hopefully that won't be the case with the competition...

Woo hoo! Got OpenGL to run on Linux. Turns out that the assembler (Karmic) was a tad bit fault, and all loops were causing segmentation violations. For a moment there, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do much at all in the competition.

Although now that I have thought of it, Lachie, what operating system(s) do you have? A Linux binary won't do you much good if you only have windows.
