As you may have noticed, FBGD has a small text ad now on the main page (and only on the main (news) page), which has been paid, and I plan to use that money to organize at least two game making compos, starting with 50 $ 1st place prize and 20 $ 2nd place price for the first competition.

Don't worry, Plasma has been informed on the ad and we came to an agreement.

The first competition should be organized within few weeks and will be in my usual style, month to two months lasting, probably with some retro twist.

Above all that, I plan to make an update soon and try to bring some life back in the site.

Unfortunately, the promised overhaul of the design has been delayed again, but I plan to ignore that for a while and concentrate on my available effforts.

Happy to be back.

Cheers everyone!

I'm glad you're back too. I'll admit, I'm a fairly new member here so I don't know the history, but I hope that this is the time when more people join and new life comes into the forum. In my opinion, cash prizes really aren't necessary, and how would the winner be paid? I think a more suitable prize would be for the winning game to be featured in the next FreeBASIC update, whenever that comes. Another concern is the number of entrants- are you going to make a game, Lachie? If so, than that would mean maybe three entries between you, me, and notthecheatr (did I spell that right?)

Is their casino site run by FreeBasic?  Lips sealed

Anyway, I probably won't participate in this competition since I'm busy and will be making a Facebook game during the rest of the semester.

I planned to send the money via PayPal to winners, but unfortunately I could only receive the money via Moneybookers (PayPal discriminates my country), so the winner would have to register there (free and easy) and then widraw the money or use it for online purchase as they please.

Don't worry about the number of entrants Brick Break. The main freebasic forum has a fairly nice amount of active memebers, and for these competitions there are always some people who spring out of nowhere.

Hi, glad to see you are back! I am not bothered about prizes, but if the competition is fun then count me in!

I've not done much FB stuff recently (been concentrating more on java) but i like the fb comps!

Would it be worth send a PM to all members to alert them of the comp when you announce it? Although i don't post often i do check in frequently but others who may be interested may not.

Given the timing btw, a christmas retro comp would be cool and potentially very funny... Smiley

A competition would be great! I had almost no time to do anything in a very long time, as I've been busy with school, learning C++ for my country's programming competition, and learning physics for the physics competition. And the little time I had to program was used to write the programs presented in a competition called KoMal each month.

If the competition will last 2 months as you said, and the winter break is in it, count me in.

Also, I also don't think prizes are necessary, although I could use the 50 bucks to by a pull-up bar Wink

Maybe we should decide on rules for the competition via a vote or something. I personally don't have any ideas except for my own game, but if anyone's interested I think the aim should be for something 3D that looks graphically nice. I also think there should be some limitations on the libraries one can use, like "You may #include either GL or fbgfx, but not both" or something like that.

I don't know how much time I have to allocate to a competition, but I *may* give it a go.

And for the love of the gods, please oh please don't make us have to work in the 80x60 resolution again. That was the painful.

I would say it was fun. Tongue

But yes, I'll try something else. I definitely won't force 3D or something like that.

Yes please don't force very nice graphics or audio. I had 2 failed games because of those. Or if the graphics are important, at least have some site from where we can download some  Smiley

I love 3D. I don't care about the challenge, everything has to be 3D. A game that isn't 3D using today's technology is a crying shame. Hell, a game using the technology of ten years ago without 3D is a crying shame.

Didn't Dr_D do his entry in 80x60 resolution in 3D? Tongue
So it wasn't finished, it was still pretty cool.

Agh, I'm running on Linux, and graphics-heavy stuff really slows it down. Which is odd, given that my screen savers that run would put even Crysis to shame. Although I think it could be an fbgfx issue rather; I haven't tried openGL.

OpenGL is the only GL, man. Fbgfx uses DirectX, which should be DESTROYED! I hate that stupid microshaft crap. Whenever I need anything from fbgfx, I just copy and paste, because I know that if I #include it all hell will break loose.

The default driver for non-Windows is x11, but I didn't know about that or DirectX. Something to look into if I want a frame rate that doesn't bounce between 0.1 and 7 fps for a game. My old game for last comp just hangs on my machine; I can't even play it.  Cheesy
