Damn... I really want to try this thing. I downloaded the package Merick posted on fb.net, and there seems to be some pretty harsh differences. Have you tried compiling it with the version he has up there?

The idea that I can be presented with a problem, set out to logically solve it with the tools at hand, and wind up with a program that could not be legally used because someone else followed the same logical steps some years ago and filed for a patent on it is horrifying.

Aha, I'm using the .bi and .a files from Merick's package but I've replaced the .dll files with the one from vc2008 version as they are half in size and worked as well, but if I try to compile with the old dlls it won't work now. The new dlls are included in the download, though, so you shouldn't be missing them. Hmm.. where did I fuck up?

I have also asked for help in the german SFML forum, hope to resolve this soon.

I went back to the mingw version of the C libs (those provided by Merick) and remembered why I abandoned them because there is a weird bug when retrieving the available screen modes which results in a crash. Anyway, I uploaded 1.01 and hope it runs for you guys now, it does for me. If the program has problems after changing the screen mode you can delete the data.dat file and start again.
Please report if it works, I'd like to see it posted in the FBGD finally Wink

Now I get "The procedure entry point alGetSource3f could not be located in the dynamic link library OpenAL32.dll"

Could you send me the one you have so we are sure it's not an outdated dll file prob?

Hrm, that made some change, but still problems. I get the classic windows message about the exe file encountering a problem and having to close.

The details:

Error signature

AppName: galactic empire 1.01.exe    AppVer: 0.0.0.0    ModName: csfml-graphics.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0    Offset: 000bf097

Trying to run the game windowed in various resolutions didn't help.

Edit:

Some good news. I ran the old GalEmp II trailer and works fine now. As well as a small SFML demo from fb.net forum. So maybe you can compare the initiation of the program in the current code and in GalEmp II trailer. I think we are making progress.

I'm pretty sure the bug is due to retrieving of the video modes, try the file above (rename to .exe) and see if it works.
I compared the code as you suggested and can't find any other reason..
Thanks for helping me tracking this down Smiley

Yup, that fixed it. Yay! Smiley

Please add this file the the official distribution.

Sadly, I can't play the game much today, but from a short glance, you provided some of the most professional looking menus in a FB game. Great work there.

Edit:

Erm, thanks for adding a reference to me in the game. Where did you get that pics from, anyway? Also, that effect on the main menu is really cool. Is that simple rotozooming? What else? Yes, is diplomacy only restricted to giving gifts? I wish I could do more with that chick.

Yeah. I should go out more.

*sigh*

Ah great!
Problem is you can't change the resolution in the game now, since it doesn't obtain the available video modes anymore - I have no idea for an elegant workaround, one solution would be to hardcode the most common resolutions but then the user would have to make sure to pick no resolution that his monitor doesn't support. Unfortunately the problem lies withing SFML here, gah Sad

As for the reference, glad you like it Grin
Those avatars are made by a Sins of a Solar Empire fan, got them from some forum I think.
The main menu effect is simple rotozooming, yes.
I kind of quickly added diplomacy to the final so yes, giving gifts is the only thing there. Could be a lot more, like treaties and stuff.

So is this now a complete version of the game now? I mean, Galactic Empire I? I need to know beacue of FBGD. Also, if it is. maybe this should belong to Showcase and future news on the development of GalEmp II be in a separate thread.

I think you are breaking your head with the resolution problem too much. Just provide the 3-4 most common ones.

http://freefile.kristopherw.us/uploads/alze/galactic_empire.rar (only .exe and .dll files)

I'm not happy with using broken dlls so I want to give it a last try with the vs2008 dlls, this time including msvcp90.dll, msvcr90.dll and Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest.
This configuration has been tested on a newly set up installation of Windows without any Runtimes installed and it worked.

If the above works for you then yes, this is now Galactic Empire I and it can be moved to Showcase. I will upload a new RAR with the final version then.

Bundle this with your game.
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip

Don't bundle .dll's when they're part of an installed program.
OpenAL files differ between systems, just copying the same dll around will not work.
