Riddle
« on: April 25, 2008, 03:30:26 PM »
Quote
I'm something you eat
and something you do.
I'm hidden in the file below
but only if you can find me.

OK, I'm no good at poetry.  Anyways.

Below is the file which contains the answer to the riddle.  Should be pretty simple, but let's see how long it takes you to figure it out  ;)  Have fun!

I know it. Heh. You reverse the data of bitmap file. (Don't try me, I am studied cryptograph analyst) :)
It's your self profile picture icon.  :P

Code: [Select]
#include once "file.bi"
dim f as uinteger
dim i as uinteger
dim x() as ubyte
dim k() as ubyte
f=filelen("hidden_message")
redim x(f-1)
redim k(f-1)
open "hidden_message" for binary as #1
get #1,,x()
close #1

for i = 0 to f-1
        k(i)=x((f-1)-i)
next i

open "reveal_message.bmp" for binary as #1
put #1,,k()
close #1

Good job, you figured out the first part.  Now find what the secret word hidden in the message is.

You're going to have to look harder than that :P  The word NOT does not fit the riddle.

And incidentally, a very similar riddle has been posted before, so if you happen to remember that one you're far more likely to find the answer to this one.

This may or may not be helpful... the original icon used to create the puzzle (note:  the message is NOT hidden in this one!)  This can be used for comparison purposes, and if you're smart enough, you'll probably find it pretty quickly using this.

By the way, if you find the answer, try to keep it to yourself for a while and give everyone else a chance.  You can PM me to confirm it, but I think when you find it there will be no need to PM as it will be pretty obvious ;)  Another hint that will only help if you find it:  it starts and ends with S.

Mysoft solved this days ago. I don't know what he is pulling off. I know where is the solution (as Mysoft explained it to me), but I don't know how to extrapolate it with an image editor. Mysoft did show me some code I didn't write down. :(

OK, so here's the solution for all to see.  Only 18 lines of code without comments or whitespace.  Very simple method, but it took a while to be solved.  MySoft came pretty close, so I gave him the answer.  Enjoy.

Code: [Select]
'Include fbgfx
#Include Once "fbgfx.bi"

'Create an image pointer
Dim As FB.Image Ptr tImg

'And a uInteger to get the point values into
Dim As uInteger tPix

'Any screen resolution will work, I just like 800x600.
'It does need 32-bit color though.
ScreenRes 800, 600, 32

'Create a 64x64 image buffer
tImg = ImageCreate(64, 64, 0, 32)
'Load the image to be revealed
BLoad "reveal_message.bmp", tImg

'For each pixel
For y As uInteger = 0 To 63
  For x As uInteger = 0 To 63
    'Lazy.  Since speed is not an issue here, we'll just use Point.
    tPix = Point(x, y, tImg)

    'Now ignore all bits except the lowest one
    tPix And = 1

    'If it's set, PSet white
    If tPix = 1 Then
      PSet (x, y), &hffffffff
    'Otherwise PSet black
    Else
      PSet (x, y), &h0
    End If
  Next
Next

'Wait for a key to be pressed
Sleep

Yes, it seems that the solution is "snickers". Like, snikers the chocolate bar (noun), and to snicker (verb).
