For any decent game, it would be pretty laggy.  Maybe if you did something like a roguelike?  That's actually kind of an interesting idea - a multiplayer online roguelike, based on IRC.  No idea if it would actually work though.  Or perhaps a turn-based MMORPG, that might work.

Best part is, coolguy hackers would try to play it from an IRC client by sending the actual game commands through IRC.  That might be fun.

Possibly, but it would likely be implemented via an external library, not in the compiler.

Anyways, little is likely to happen with the compiler in the near future as TMK all the devs are on hiatus.

I dunno about IRC libraries, but there are a couple of socket libraries and if you search the freebasic.net forums I'm fairly certain there's at least one IRC client someone made.  Perhaps you could read the source code and write one yourself?

Not bad at all - even the game graphics are tolerable (though the title page made me cringe a bit).

It started out pretty slow and easy (I was playing Vanilla... ::)) but I did eventually end up dead.  I'll probably try again in a harder mode or something.

This game certainly has potential.

Yes, but DarkBasic is for a limited platform.  Its primary purpose is for making games through its built-in libraries, whereas FreeBasic is a more generalized language that can be used for many different things, on many different platforms.

Different languages serve different purposes, so they are designed differently.  What use would there be in writing FreeBasic if it were identical to DarkBasic?

You forget that fbgfx is not the only option.

Besides, some people don't want Alt-F4 to work the way it normally does.  It's easy to implement Alt-F4 closing yourself with fbgfx, and there's far more freedom if you do it manually instead of having it done for you, where you don't get a choice in the matter.

No, there's no "magic code."  The problem with "magic code" is that it's hard to support across multiple systems and it breaks easily.  Most of us prefer to use open source libraries rather than rely heavily on magic code built into the compiler.  fbgfx is an exception to this rule for the sake of compatibility, but besides that everything must be done through third-party libraries.  This makes some things harder, but ultimately it gives you far more freedom and control over your code than if the compiler magically does everything for you.

I'm not sure what language you're used to but FreeBasic is a bit different.  That said, there are ways of doing almost everything.  You'll use different code to implement Alt-F4 depending on whether you're using fbgfx, Windows, or some other OS or windowing system - BadMrBox gave an example that works with fbgfx, and obviously if you're using some other platform you'll need to do it another way.  If you're using Windows, for example, you should look up the Win32 standard library references; if OpenGL, look up the OpenGL references.  Any event-based system will have some way of capturing Alt-F4.

As for Alt-Tab, that might be an anomaly with your system because nobody else seems to be having that problem.  Unlike Alt-F4, Alt-Tab is normally handled by Windows itself.  If Alt-Tab won't work for you, it's likely a problem with Windows, not FreeBasic.
