Title: Barren – Finally released!
Post by: Lachie Dazdarian on May 31, 2008, 07:37:38 PM
Yeah. I thought it would never happen. The crap I started having trying to pack this game. But that's all (I hope) behind me.

Barren is finally here. The game that sucked up half of my game dev life.

Download (Windows): http://lachie.phatcode.net/Downloads/Barren_v12.zip (16.6 MB)
Download (Linux): http://hmcsoft.org/fb/barren_v12_linux.tar.bz2 (15.4 MB)

Screenshots:

Game webpage: http://lachie.phatcode.net/barren.php

Anyway, this is classic point and click adventure game played through the eyes of the player (scene by scene movement). It's placed in a SF-phantasmagoria type of setting where you play a person of unknown origin stranded in a strange dreamlike place. It’s a relatively short adventure game, but features a fair of amount of cut scenes and cool atmosphere.

The project was started long time ago during 2002 (as a QB program) without a clear goal, which resulted in several aspect of the game being quite clumsy. The source code passed through several overhauls, and the final version of the scripting system was a nightmare to manage. Probably a wiser game dev would kill this project long time ago. But not me. I'm a nurturing mother-like game designer. :P

I love my children. While others would abort it, I bore this monster in my womb, gave birth to it, and taught it to crawl, then walk, and then speak. Others would walk away from it, I didn’t. So you will forgive certain improper features my child has. ;)

Due its long development process a lot of people entered and left the project which resulted in a large amount of gfx/sound resource being done for the game, and I'm quite proud on that part of the project. Josiah did some great stuff with several cut scenes graphics, and his awesome music accompanies most of the game. He came last to the project and practically saved it. Zamaster too did his share of music tracks which are equally great. Na_th_an’s early work on the fake OS shouldn't be missed too.

Also, beta testers did a great work on improving the game so one more thank to them.

Anyway, download the game if curious and be so kind to post some feedback. A walkthrough with few Easter egg clues will be delivered to people who email me with kind words and with a proof they actually tried to complete the game.

Cheers!

Cool, I've just started, but I'm enjoying it so far, especially the ambiance and cut scenes.

P.s. If anyone has linux FMOD troubles poke me for a while.

Lachie already knows I think this game is beautiful, but I'm not sure everyone else does.  This is just a great game, through and through.

My plans where to simply download this and play a bit to give you a good evaluation. Well that was an hour and a half ago. I couldn't stop and probably wouldn't have if I didn't become hopelessly stuck(stupid android). I love it, great job. The graphics, music, atmosphere and challenge all work nicely. I will now go back to playing it. I will never be able to make a game up to this standard, really great job.

DaBooda out...

P.S. I'm not ashamed of being stuck, but you suck anyways for beating it mr.you-know-who-you-are.

Damn, I forgot to mention that. Besides that - the pong game was kinda... eh, hard.

Hrm, I just finished it, but I'm convinced that I haven't done everything.

Anywhoo, what's with the pouring out spolilers into this thread?

Thanks a lot people for all the kind words. I wasn't expecting such raving comments on the game.

I'm really happy to see that most of you made some progress in the game, and got stuck on different places.

Thanks for pointing out another bug nkk. I will fix it. I didn't have the patience to test the game in Scale2X very thoroughly on my PC much as it runs slow in that mode for me. Anyway, it's a Scale2X glitch. Will be fixed in few days when I'm sure I got all the bugs listed.

To Hezad:
Hezad, you should be able to ask questions about Torn only if you read the poster. So you prolly missed that. Nevertheless, I'll double check my code.

Any yes, could you folks please turn down on spoilers. It's a short game. Thanks.

What I forgot to say in the original thread, I will probably take a break from game design after this game. It's not that it didn't happen before, but this is the first time I'm making a conscious decision. Some 2-4 months I'm not starting anything. I'll concentrate on FBGD depending on how much my free time allows.

Oh.. okay I understand, my brain didn't got the message :p Sorry for the spoiler, I'm getting it off right now :)

*ninja*  Sorry guys - I edited a potential spoiler or two out.  Lachie probably doesn't like that, because it can start flame wars since people get defensive about their post content.  I won't be editing any more, of course.  I think everyone here's hit the same point in the game by now.

I know I contributed to it and have already played through it multiple times, but I love this game.
The atmosphere, the style, the abstract story, the uh... The things I've already mentioned to you. :-\ Oh well. It's great. :P

Oh, hi Josiah. Sorry, I forgot to email you the moment I released the game. Hope you won't hold that against me.

Anyway, I updated the original thread with a new download link (version 1.1).

I fixed the bugs reported by nkk and hexdude (first two contain spoliers):

* the bug with the pong game not displaying properly (thanks nkk)
* grey box artifact in the nameless man animation (thanks hexdude)

* some rather clumsy image memory buffers stunts were done in version 1.0. which made the game crash at certain points (ack!); well, at least I fixed it

Nah, of course not, it was a nice surprise coming here and seeing the release topic.

I'm glad you finally finished this; maybe I can someday finish a few of my previous projects. ;)
I just got back from Disneyland, so my dialup connection will be busy tonight, but maybe if I can find a connection to upload my 4GB of pictures and video, I can download this too. :) :D
BTW, this thread is hard to read. :P  8)

Finished it (with the help of nkk..er, shhh :) ) - very awesome atmosphere and witty descriptions... got stuck a couple of times where I don't know if I would've found the solution myself, but with a few hints, I made it.  I was quite impressed by the endlessly filling bucket. ;)

A'moment... I stuck for a while here due to critical coding... But, I must spare time to say;

Congratulation!. :D

I was quite impressed by the endlessly filling bucket. ;)

It's not endless, it fills up slowly and overflows, and when it does, you get a special prize if you push space at the moment of overflowing. So watch it carefully. And remember, if your eyes get tired, it's worth it, keep watching.

A, ninja. A, Pritchard. A, me. Let's shut down and keep it secret!  ;)

OK, I fisihing the download. I play it.

The first thing I want to say;
 This is make dabooda will scary to rip down due to bmp scambler.  ;D
 And some cryptic way...
 But he still can rip via ogg..... :P

The second;
 A... little too dark.... here... maybe... i.... need... a torch.... Err,.... better Raise Screen Brightness (I forgot charging the battery) :P

The third;

Quote
#3 I can't many any progress in this game.
------------------------------------------
I do deliver walkthroughs to...
"special" friends. ;)
Help! I really needed one! :P

The fourth;
Quote
#4 I can't pause during the game.
---------------------------------
Make sure you put your whole head in
front of the shotgun. Thank you!
That the least funniest things in scary game, lol  :D

The last;
 I like the filtering effect... Remain me to NES filter. Cool! :D

Ugh, I'm not very good at this sort of thing.  This will sound really lame, but I haven't even figured out how to start.  Visited all the visitable areas on all four maps, examined and tried to grab everything I could see, and talked to the two NPCs I saw.  Nothing has happened.  Do I need to keep looking for something, or is there something really obvious I'm missing?

Title: Re: Barren – Finally released!
Post by: Lachie Dazdarian on June 06, 2008, 06:16:46 PM
notthecheatr, you have been PMed.

Anyway, there was a version update.

From the updated readme:

Quote
Version 1.2 (07.06.2008) - A gameplay critical bug fixed. One of the game triggers wasn't reset properly once you executed it in one game. If you played a new game after that trigger has been changed in any of the previous games or after you loaded a saved game with this trigger changed, you were able to finish the game without having to execute this action that was solved (triggered) in a previous game.

I'm so proud: http://www.reloaded.org/download/Barren/395/

A bit overrated, but who am I to complain?

BTW, my website monthly bandwidth is very thin! Ack! I mustn't make big (file size) games anymore. :P

16gb is thin?! :P

Good review i liked it ;)

and yeah graphics are overrated. They sucked..aye?(just kidding :P)

And use something better than "behemoth" bmp next time, Gowron! :P

Wow, even the negative points aren't so bad (I actually enjoyed the red herrings and difficult challenges)

BTW, I discovered that Frodo (the reviewer) is a she. Time for the maker of a "great game" to make his move. Bo-yah!

Someone please help me!

:P

Now in a serious note.

I meant to notify you Josiah about this review as it is very complimenting on your side of the work. Kudos on that.

Really nice game, the music really is wonderful and the whole feeling of the game is like the story itself.
And yes I'm stuck. Here's what I have:iron bar, radio, flower, ID card, key, wire. I also had a CD to which I copied DATA1.dat and gave it to the robot, who took it and still didn't let me to the controls since I wasn't the supply unit...
I'll probably need some hints, until then I'll just try to find that master login disk.

You are on the good path with the CD and the android. Perhaps you are not supposed to please him with the CD but do the opposite. Think about the files you have on the computer hard disk. Also, you don't have a radio in the game. You are probably thinking about the battery. Plug it somewhere in!

Title: Re: Barren – Finally released!
Post by: Tusike on July 06, 2008, 09:37:25 AM
Using the battery I found the password to operating the missile. Other than that I was able to draw something on the picture of Torn Gapo.
I launched the rocket and destroyed the place I was in. Did I win? ;D

-Tusike

PS: I don't know if this has been reported yet, but try typing on the computer. After you reach the bottom of the screen the screen becomes something else before showing the new line, as if a screenlock and unlock were missing.

Title: Re: Barren – Finally released!
Post by: Lachie Dazdarian on July 06, 2008, 09:48:58 AM
No, you did not finish the game. Nor you destroyed the place you were in. What are you talking about? Also, didn't you talk we the guy who...crashed?

Yeah, you found another bug I missed. Not that I'm quite in the mood to fix it (I have two versions to re-build - Linux and Windows). It's a rather obscure one, obviously found by someone trying to break the game. :P

But I'm noting it.

Title: Re: Barren – Finally released!
Post by: Tusike on July 06, 2008, 10:07:22 AM
Well, after I launched the rocket I saw how the missile was launched and then 3 other ones and they crashed into the powerplant part of the town/city. I was returned to the main menu. So no, I didn't talk with anyone who crashed... Only the graveyard man and the immortal one
