FBGD needs a redesign...seriously
« on: January 28, 2011, 06:45:21 PM »
It just looks so...1999.

I can offer my services for...$0 an hour. ;D
Did you code the site yourself in php, or are you using some configured system?
Just saying there's lots of room for improvement. I would like to help where I can.

Yes, Lachie did. The forum though is SMF of course.

I frankly like the retro look. Do we need a new system?

The site is the best I can do. I've been offered once for help, but the guy bailed out. If you are experienced in PHP/MySQL we can talk. Email me joe.

Cheers!

Yes, site front-end looks a bit messy. Blue on dark blue is not quite readable. Better front-end would attract more potential visitors that stay on site more than 3 secounds.

- Something as a clear background (plain white, white to light gray graydent).
- Black Verdana font for plain text; dark gray, bold for links, underline only when mouse over.
- Large Representative thumbs for categories in categ. view, with sort desc. of how should usual game in category look.
- Greater scored games come first under category/game list view, by default.
- Large thumb of in game screenshot, and short description in category/game list view.
- Game view page should have LARGE, VISIBLE download button, mirrors would be appreciated.
- Game should have link to other soure reviews if some, opened in a sepparate tab/window.

Just a proposal... :)

Personally I don't mind but yes it could be cooler...
Maybe we can do something about it later on...
But for now it is fine.

If we make it too much like bored.com we will attract those kind of people.

Something that bugs me way more than the site layout: when a game is made by "Kristopher Windsor, Kelsey Higham and Patrick Khachi," it doesn't show up on the list of games made by "Kristopher Windsor."
You probably can't win trying to please people with the CSS, but fixing the above in your database structure would be a good step forward.

I think the color scheme is fine. Maybe darken up the background a bit, I dunno. For my monitor, the contrast is just fine.

Well, I hope ecxjoe will email me. It was coded by yours truly in PHP, and the database is in MySQL. I just don't have much of a sense in webdesign to try a redesign (again) myself.

I like the idea of a retro-style theme. I was thinking of something with a web 2.0 sort of look (a bit like bored.com), but with some retro-game-style inspiration. I'm not too great at web design, but I'll see what I can come up with.

*dramatic clap*

Well, great. I think this forum is a perfect example of what you're going for.

EDIT: By retro, I meant 1999. You didn't intend to make it look like a jukebox, did you?

I'm thinking more like 1989. You know, the days of text-based browsing.

Not DOS terminal, I hope.
